Civil Rights Movement Jigsaw Activity (Class #6)

Today you will review 7 major events from the Civil Rights Movement and how they featured principles of nonviolence. Finally, you will take a quiz to show what you've learned.

Step 1: Getting Into Jigsaw Groups

1. Students will form 3 groups.
2. Each group will feature 7 students. Within each group, there should be a student who researched each event in the previous class.
3. Arrange desks so that everyone has a central seat at the table.

Step 2: Jigsaw Conversation

1. Each student should have their Six Principles of Nonviolence on their desk, along with their laptop.
2. Each student will explain the gist of their Civil Rights event. Then, they will explain which principles of nonviolence were a part of their event. 
3. Other students in the group will add the information to their note catchers (typing on their computers). Each student should download the note catcher here. The note catcher should be opened in Pages.

Step 3: Civil Rights Quiz #2
Our Civil Rights Quiz #2 will be postponed until Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. Here's what you will be tested on:

STANDARD: Demonstrate how people and events influence history.

LT: I can identify 7 major events from the Civil Rights Movement.

LT: I can identify the principles of nonviolence that were a part of the Civil Rights Movement.

LT: I can explain how Gandhi's nonviolent philosophy influenced Civil Rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr.
